Naples Blog

We went to Naples for a week in June 2025. Full of life, graffiti strewn, seemingly no rules of the road, enormous amounts of street activity, grand palazzos, Roman ruins in Pompeii, fantastic archeological finds and great food. We were staying in a hotel situated in one floor of an old palazzo in the centre of Naples.

Grand old buildings. Some Street stuff (waiting paramedics, a mannequin in a bucket, a floating head and love hearts in the Castle). Some very dense and tired streets, teeming with vibrant life. Here we have the Gallery Umberto, the Castle and the square outside the Royal Palace as well as views of the sea and the city at night.

National Archaeology Museum

The greatest finds from the ashes of Pompeii are collected here. They look brand new.

Sorrento

We travelled by graffiti-covered train to Sorrento and spent time overlooking the crowded “beach”, visiting the Museo Correale (where the finest artefacts were collected by two philanthropic brothers), seeing the multicoloured Sorrento Tourist Bureau chief, and taking every opportunity to get some people-watching Street photos.

Capri

We had a short boat trip to the isle of Capri. On the outward journey, we had great views of the port and city of Naples. While on Capri, which is much more mountainous than we realised, we visited the Axel Munthe museum – the main philanthropic collection of artefacts of Capri. Views from the top of the mountain were stunning.

Pompeii

We travelled to Pompeii by train amongst many thousands of other tourists but this vast city could easily hide triple the number. There are endless ruined houses, some with intact bath-houses, columns, friezes or other decorations. There is still plenty of archaeological activity restoring and discovering new decorations or parts of buildings.

The end of the trip

We concluded our trip to Naples with a tour of the Duomo (one of the main churches), the Modern Art Museum, passing a street party and sitting in the cool of the Botanical Gardens.
